This piece, which depicts a rose coming out of a Walther P38, is a take on the famous photo in which a protester stuck a daisy in to the barrel of soldier's gun that was pointed directly at him. It's a statement about something beautiful stemming from something meant to destroy. That notion is a big part of why I chose to use gunpowder as a medium. Gunpowder is a substance that was designed and formulated with the sole intention of destruction: reducing giant rock formations and mountains to rubble in the form of dynamite, and firing cannonballs/bullets to kill. I guess I find it refreshing to be able to create something beautiful from a substance with such a horrible dark stigma.
